The mother-in-law froze when she saw the necklace in her daughter-in-law’s hand. It was not an ordinary piece of jewelry, but the matching necklace she and the young woman’s mother had worn when they were still best friends and had founded their first company together, starting from a small shop. The husband shot up from the sofa, the mistress quickly moved aside, and the entire luxurious living room fell into an icy silence. “Where did you get that?” the husband asked, his voice trembling. The young wife did not look at him, but directly at her mother-in-law. “My mother left it to me before she died,” she said slowly. “Along with this necklace, she left a letter, recordings, old contracts… and every piece of evidence about what you did to my mother, to this company, and to your own husband.”
The mother-in-law turned pale, but still tried to hold on to her arrogance. “Shut up,” she hissed. “Your mother was nothing but a failure.” The wife took a thick envelope from her handbag and dropped it onto the glass coffee table. Inside were old photographs, the company’s founding documents, the first product designs, accounting books, and backed-up recordings. “Twenty years ago, my mother and you founded this company together. My mother handled the designs, the products, and the honest clients. You managed the money and outside connections. But then you had an affair with a gangster. He was the one who dragged you into illegal business: money laundering, abusive lending, trap contracts that buried small partners in debt, making countless families lose their homes, their businesses, and their lives.” The husband looked at his mother, completely pale. “Mom… what does this mean?”
The wife took one step forward, her voice full of pain but cold as a blade. “My mother discovered everything. She refused to let the company become a tool for destroying people’s lives. She wanted to go to the police. She wanted to return the money to the people who had been deceived. But you and your gangster lover sent men to beat her, locked her inside an old warehouse, forced her to sign herself out of the company, and then accused her of stealing money.” The mother-in-law trembled, clenching her fists until her fingers turned white. The daughter-in-law looked straight at her. “From a founder, my mother was turned into a thief. You stole her shares, stole her name, and then threw her out of the very company she had built with her entire youth.”
The husband picked up one of the photographs from the envelope. In it, his father was still alive, standing between his mother and his wife’s mother in front of the company building on the day of its opening. On the back was a sentence written by the young woman’s mother: He already knows the truth. That is why they will not let him live in peace. The husband went breathless. “My father…” he whispered. Then the wife played an old recording from her phone. Her mother’s voice filled the room: “Her husband discovered that she was cheating on him and using the company for illegal business. He wanted a divorce and planned to hand the evidence to the police. But three days later, he had an accident. It was not an accident. She and her lover planned everything.” The phone almost slipped from the husband’s hands. He looked at his mother as if he were seeing a stranger. “Did you kill my father?”
The mother-in-law stepped back, her lips trembling, with no trace of elegance left on her perfectly made-up face. The mistress stood up at once, terrified as she realized she had entered a family rotten from the inside. The wife pressed the necklace against her chest; tears ran down her face, but her eyes were no longer weak. “Today, I didn’t only discover that my husband was betraying me,” she said. “I came to end the crime that began twenty years ago. I have already sent all the evidence to my lawyers, to the financial police, and to the families who were left in debt because of your company.” Outside the villa, the sound of several cars stopping could be heard. The mother-in-law turned sharply toward the door, her whole body rigid. The wife looked at her one last time. “You stole my mother’s company, stole her honor, and stole your own husband’s life. But today, everything you built on crime is going to collapse.” The camera closed in on the mother-in-law’s terrified face as she realized that the daughter-in-law she had just called a servant not only knew about the affair, but had brought with her the sentence for her entire false life.
